Brook-Shepherd, Gordon,
ARCHDUKE OF SARAJEVO: The Romance and Tragedy of Franz Ferdinand of Austria.
VG/VG. Hardcover in dust jacket; jacket in mylar. Little, Brown and Company, 1984.
First American Edition. Maps, photographs, notes, index, 301 pages. ~~~ ...With exclusive
access to the Archduke's private papers, and through interviews with surviving relatives, Gordon Brook-Shepherd recreates the unquenchable devotion between Sophie and Francis Ferdinand,
the cruel social and political hierachies of the royal court, and the energy with which the Archduke revolutionized his army, established a modern navy, and tried to diffuse the powder keg that was early twentieth century Europe.
In a conclusion that bristles with suspense -- even though its violent end is clear --
he relieves the tragic last day of the Archduke and his sophie. This biography is an unforgettable portrait of what truly was the crumbling of an era...

Cassels, Lavender,
THE ARCHDUKE AND THE ASSASSIN: Sarajevo, June 28th, 1914.
VG/VG.
Dorset Press, 1984. Hardcover with dust jacket. Photographs, notes, bibliography, index, 216 pages.
~~~ No political assassination has affected the lives of more of the human race than that of Franz Ferdinand, heir apparent to the throne of the Austrian Empire. When Gavrilo Princip, a 19-year-old Bosnian student, murdered the Habsburg heir, he triggered a chain reaction that started WWI and that in turn led to WWII. Now, with unprecidented help from the Archduke's surviving daughter, the author for the first time thoroughly captures the personality of the Archduke who dreaded war, as well as of the student who coveted martyrdom, while illuminating the Balkan politics whose disarray set off the greatest carnage of modern times."
