B.J. Omanson

NEW copy. (Monongahela Press: 2018) Trade paperback, perfect-bound, 8.5x11. Photographs, illustrations, maps, footnotes, bibliography, index.

Alpheus Appenheimer was a teamster with Headquarters Detachment, 6th Machine Gun Battalion, 4th Brigade of Marines, 2d Division (Regular), American Expeditionary Force. He served in every major operation of the Marine Brigade until he was wounded on the eve of the Battle of the Argonne. He received two Silver Star Citations and two Croix de Guerres for actions at Belleau Wood and Blanc Mont.

This history covers his two years service in the Marine Corps during the First World War, on a nearly day-by-day basis, as well as a portrait of his life on an Illinois farm prior to enlistment. It is a social as well as a military history, with as much emphasis on the effects of the war at home and relations with French villagers, as on military matters.

Projected publication: Summer, 1918.
